The essence of great compassion, the great Sakyapa Lama,

Who was blessed by (the Indian mahasiddha) Virupa,

Transmitted the ocean of secret tantric texts

Spread the complete teachings of the Buddha,

And established the wondrous Sakya School.

The master Marpa, with great personal hardship and danger,

Travelled to India and Nepal, where he

Studied with masters such as Naropa and Maitripa,

And through mastering the instructions of the pandits and adepts

Established a tradition of pure practice

That was transmitted through a number of lines

Collectively called the Kargyu, or “Instruction Lineage”*
